Rhiannon Linacre,Megan Mcjannet and Rebecca Williams represented Coxmoor and the county of Nottinghamshire at this years EGU Junior Champion Club tournament at Woodhall Spa on the 20th and 21st August 2011.The girls prepared with a practice round on the 19th and were joined by our reserve Keeley Sweeney. After taking in the enormity of the competition they were playing in the girls got down to some serious practice on the tricky sloping greens on the Bracken course.Fortunately for the practice and competition rounds we were blessed with glorious weather. The first day of competition arrived and as we are the only all girls team to ever play in the event interest was high and the press officer wanted to speak to the girls and get some pictures taken. After fulfilling their media duties the girls readied themselves for the coming challenge.First out was Rhiannon Linacre who led from the front and had her confidence boosted by chipping in for birdie on the fifth hole.Playing some fabulous golf she reached twenty three points through nine holes and continued to play great golf to the end the highlight being a tap in birdie at the difficult fifteenth.Rhiannon ended the first round on a very creditable forty points.Second out was Megan Mcjannet who eased her way into the tournament with some great drives and the odd fabulous fairway bunker shots.Again the greens were proving difficult to master and Megan turned for home in fourteen points.Megans back nine was a fantastic effort and playing some great golf got rewarded with a finishing total of thirty five points.Third out was Rebecca Williams who despite driving the ball well struggled on the front nine to come to terms with the course. On the back nine Rebecca reminded us all what a great prospect she is by playing some fine attacking golf and reurning a back nine total of seventeen points to end on twenty four points.Rhiannon and Megans scores counted towards the team total so we had seventy five points which had us in sixth place overall.
Day two arrived and the girls were determined to do their best to bring the trophy home.Again Rhiannon led the way and set about her task in typical determined fashion.Playing some steady golf she reached the turn in nineteen points and started the back nine with some great shots in particular her tee shot on the eleventh which shaved the hole as it went four foot past.A tricky end to Rhiannons round ended with her scoring a highly creditable thirty six points.A great two days of golf enhancing a growing reputation.Megan was again next out and started very well again driving the ball well and giving herself plenty of scoring opportunities. On the eighth hole Megan put her second shot into the water but after taking a drop proceeded to play one of the shots of the tournament chipping to about four inches from the hole sending the watching crowd into rapturous applause. The back nine again proved the more difficult and Megan came home in a superb thirty four points.Rebecca set out determined to improve on the previous day and was soon racking up the points. It was again on the difficult eighth hole that we witnessed another miraculous shot. After getting a drop off the path Rebecca facing water and a sloping green sent a wedge shot to within a foot again sending the watching masses into rapturous applause.Turning in twenty points Rebecca carried on her fine work on the back nine eventually finishing on forty points. With Rebeccas and Rhiannons scores to count we had seventy six points to add to our first day seventy five.Giving us a total of one hundred and fifty one points this was good enough for us to finish fourth which is a truly fantastic achievement. The plaudits from around the county and from the EGU continue to arrive in recognition of the girls efforts.
Not only were the girls a credit on the golf course but also off the course and Coxmoor can be rightly proud of our great girls. As well a massive thanks to parents grandparents and supporters who all take away fabulous memories from the event.Lastly to everyone who donated towards the accomodation costs many thanks it was certainly appreciated.
Well done the GIRLS !!!!!!!
