Juniors Noticeboard : Tony Thorpe Salver

On Saturday 10/9/11 Coxmoor Scratch Team played against Coxmoor Junior Team for the Tony Thorpe Salver. The first match out saw Tucker Payne and Chris Powell take on Jack Worley and Rhiannon Linacre. The match was a close encounter from the start but the youngsters had managed to get two up through the first six holes. The juniors were unable to stretch this lead and the match went all the way to the eighteenth with the juniors winning one up.The second match out saw a formidable pairing of Derek Mcjannet and Robert Oakden take on Tom Cumberland and Ashley Johnson. This match got off to a flying start with both teams trading birdies early on.Through six holes the junior pair were three up but the match had seen seven birdies and an eagle shared among the four players. The scoring steadied on the back nine which saw the senior pair peg back the lead to one down through eleven holes. The juniors soon restored a healthy advantage though to take the match three and two on the sixteenth green.Match three saw Tim Clarke and Martin Scothern take on Sam Darrington and Pearce Whetton.Again the match saw birdies being traded early on with the juniors being one up through the first six holes.Through twelve holes the juniors were still one up but an easy birdie for Martin Scothern made the match all square through thirteen holes.Showing their class on the next four holes saw the scratch men secure a two and one victory.Match four saw Heath Linacre and Ben Cumberland take on Joseph Hague and Jack Darrington. The banter was in full flow from the first tee until the conlusion of the match. To the juniors credit they were in the lead early on and it wasn't until the thirteenth that the veteran pair managed to get on level terms.Eventually the senior pairing edged in front and came down the last one up and managed to cling on for a well fought victory.Game five saw Trevor Ryan and Jonathon Parker take on Cormac Ryan and his partner Keeley Sweeney. The junior pair again went into and early lead and managed to extend this to be four up through thirteen holes.A spirited finish from the scratch men saw the match arrive at the eighteenth green all square. With both pairings making par up the last the spoils were shared. The last match saw Mick Sweeney and Steve Griffiths take on Milo Ryan and Alastair Mcjannet. This match was a close fought affair for the first nine holes and the match turned all square.Winning the next two holes saw the senior pair edge in front and it was a lead they never surrendered and ended up winning five and four. The end match result saw the scratch team triumph three and a half to two and a half. The match was played in a great spirit of which i am sure Tony Thorpe would have been proud. The match continues to provide a good insight for the juniors as to what it takes to represent the club at scratch team level.Chairman of Notts Junior Golf Stan Yeomans and Coxmoor Captain Tom KIng were on hand to present the salver to winning captain Trevor Ryan. The junior team look forward to regaining the salver at next years match.
